A United States counter-terrorism official claims the number of suspected terrorists banned from flying to or within the country has more than doubled in the past year.

The official, who has spoken to the US media on condition of anonymity, says the number of people on the no-fly list has leapt from 10,000 one year ago to about 21,000.

Washington correspondent John Stempin says the US government lowered the standard for putting people on the list after the failed Christmas Day 2009 bombing of a Detroit bound plane.

He told Phillippa Carisbrooke, there are now two lists involving potential passengers.
