Japanese pop star Mayu Tomita, who was hospitalised after being stabbed over 20 times by a male stalker fan, has regained consciousness.

Sources state that Mayu, 20, had regained consciousness sometime around Friday, about two weeks after she was left unconscious and in critical condition after suspect Tomohiro Iwazaki had stabbed her.

A source involved in the investigation into the incident stated that while the star sustained a deep wound in her neck region, the attacker missed all her vital organs. Authorities plan to ask Mayu about the incident following approval from doctors once her condition stabilises.

Previous reports have stated that Iwazaki had stalked Mayu on her social media for months before the attack.
