Eurovision Party Costume Ideas

Hosting a Eurovision party at home? Don’t forget the most essential element: fabulous costumes! Here’s some inspiration for a last-minute costume fix!

Eurovision

Knit a Conchita beard

Conchita Wurst is one of the most iconic Eurovision winners in recent years, so it seems only natural to give the Eurovision winner a nod (or chinwag) with a homemade beard!
Eurovision
The iconic style was embraced by the youth of Vienna last year, who took out their knitting needles and crafted beards in support of the 'Rise like a phoenix' star. ORF, the Austrian public broadcaster, also backed the beard, starting a “Knit for tolerance” campaign.
The group created this great how-to video for German knitters (sprechen Sie Deutsch?). Don't worry if you're lacking the language, the demonstration may still prove helpful. The "Conchita beard" is a super quick and easy style to knit up!
Of course, if you’re not much for knitting, you could always create a paper mask!

Get Kate Miller Heidke's Look

Sure, Kate Miller Heidke's doing all the hard work up there, hitting the high notes on the bendy pole, but you know what they say, 'Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery'. So show your love by copying her look. Get crafty and make your own version of her crown/tiara to perfect your Eurovision look. Download the PDF.

Inject some Hard Rock (Hallelujah) in your Eurovision party

Eurovision
Good Lordi! Give your Eurovision viewing party a Halloween vibe and pay tribute to 2006’s heavy-metal winners  by donning a terrifying monster mask – like this fan did! It’s fair to say that good-quality latex monster masks don’t come cheap, but if you're deft with face paint, the DIY look can work just as well.

Wear a circus tent

Eurovision
Pay homage to the costume of the Netherlands’ 2002 entrant, Linda Wagenmakers. Embracing a "Bigger is better!" mentality, the performer wore a circus tent costume with such a ginormous skirt, her whole backing band could have camped down there.

Embrace your inner Power Ranger

Power Ranger costumes are easily obtainable from most costume shops, and bear a striking resemblance to Jedward in their 2012 performance of ‘Waterline’ for their home country Ireland.

OR better yet, just wear a bag of popcorn to channel their press conference vibe.

Go disco fabulous

Eurovision
Comedy fans will no doubt remember Father Ted and Dougal’s attempt to make it into the contest with their song 'My Lovely Horse'. Pay tribute to the greatest Eurovision act that never was, with some cheap glitter-sequined jackets. If you’ve never seen the song, you are truly deprived – check it out below!
Irish fans of the Father Ted TV show are so dedicated to the song that they even petitioned Ireland’s parliament last year to make it the country’s official entry for 2015. Sadly they were not successful. Get the look by donning a loud metallic disco jacket and amusing Irish accent.

Go for the garden gnome look

eurovision
All you need to emanate Moldova’s Zdob si zdob (2011) are some giant cones. Go DIY with some coloured cardboard and a stapler, knit your own, or better yet, find a traffic cone!

Get flared up

ABBA

Pay tribute to ABBA, Genghis Khan or just about any of the Eurovision entries from the 1970s with a pair of flares - or even better, knickerbockers! Available from your local op shop.

Mix business with pleasure

Eurovision
Team a smart shirt and tie with silver sequined hotpants and voila! You are now Lithuania’s 2010 entry, Inculto! Not only is their costume easy to replicate but their dance moves are a cinch too!

Get (nearly) naked

eurovision
If you’re a fan of making your costumes as revealing as possible then Ukraine’s 2009 entrant Svetlana Loboda’s performance featuring half naked Roman soldiers is one to draw inspiration from! It pretty much only requires hotpants and then you can maybe stick a broom on your head!

Be a twisted sister

Eurovision
The intertwined hairstyle of Russia's Tolmachevy Sisters is definitely distinctive and will get plenty of comments. It’s probably not the most convenient of hairdos though if mobility (or bathroom privacy) is important to you!
