About the Show
Behind every front door is a story. But do the neighbours know?
Often we don’t really know the people who live in our street. Who are they and what is happening in their lives? When you take a closer look, you might just bump into a very special person with a very interesting story.
Every episode of Behind the Front Door visits two random streets in neighbourhoods throughout the country. Residents are shown a photo of a neighbour: Do they know this particular person? Is he or she married? What kind of job do they have? Are they happy?
Next, we hand over the neighbour’s front door key so residents can take a look around the home. Meanwhile, the neighbour watches everything from a van and hears first-hand the visitors' reactions and speculations. As the visitors rummage around in their neighbour’s home, they learn more about their neighbour by opening cupboards and looking at pictures on the walls.
In the process, prejudices are dispelled and assumptions challenged. By looking around the house, the visitors can form a picture of the person or family living there. What’s their first impression? And what’s their neighbour’s life story?
The visitors watch a video portrait and learn unexpected details of their neighbour’s life. They may discover that the woman with the headscarf is, in fact, an ambitious young woman who fled Afghanistan at the age of 11 and is now a fourth year medical student. Or that their next door neighbour is fighting a life-threatening disease.
After the visitors have watched the touching video portrait the neighbours finally get to meet and are no longer strangers.
