The Tibetan Children's Village

A village of Tibetan orphans in Dharamsala in Northern India.

In 1959, after an unsuccessful uprising against China's occupation of Tibet, approximately 80,000 Tibetans fled across the Himalayas with the Dalai Lama to Dharamsala in Northern India.  When the Dalai Lama saw that many refugees were children, he created a nursery for them. This was later expanded into the Tibetan Children's Village, a village just for them where they could be educated in the Tibetan tradition. Since then, largely thanks to international aid, the village has grown and is now home to 2500 children. Most of their parents are Tibetan exiles in India.
