Australia is considering banning laptops on international flights on the lines of similar announcements made by US and UK recently.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull indicated Australia was considering the issue and “looking at it very closely”.

"We are taking into account all of the information and advice we're receiving internationally and we're working very closely with our partners,” Mr Turnbull said.

"In due course, any announcements will be made formally though the Transport Minister."

US banned laptops on international flights originating from certain airports in Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East and North Africa in March. UK quickly followed their suit.

US is also considering extending this ban to certain flights originating from Europe.

On Wednesday, European Union and U.S. transport and security officials will meet in Brussels to discuss U.S. plans to broaden an in-flight ban on laptops and tablets to include planes from Europe, ABC News reports.

This follows fresh intelligence militant groups like Islamic State could be gearing up for a terrorist attack involving bombs in laptops, AAP said.
