SBS to broadcast Australian Volleyball Super League, Beach Tour and World Futures

Media releases

Super League season commences tomorrow Saturday August 12

SBS has announced a multi-year partnership with Volleyball Australia that will see 19 events made available live and free to Australian audiences during the 2023-24 season, beginning with the inaugural season of the Australian Volleyball Super League from tomorrow, August 12, 2023.

The deal comes ahead of the competition’s inaugural season scheduled to commence this Saturday, August 12, where six foundational teams will contest a five-game home-and-away season before the finals take place in September.

Each team – the Adelaide Storm, Canberra Heat, Melbourne Vipers, NSW Phoenix, Perth Steel, and Queensland Pirates – will field men’s and women’s sides that will play on the same day, at the same venue, and in the same ticketed session.

This decision forms part of Volleyball Australia’s plan to further innovate the sport and allows for more fast-paced matches that are certain to excite the public.

SBS Director of Sport, Ken Shipp said, “SBS has a proud history of supporting under-represented sports and this new partnership with Volleyball Australia will provide Australian audiences with unprecedented access to live and free volleyball coverage.”

Volleyball Australia CEO Andrew Dee says the arrangement is a win for the sport and its fans. “In recent years SBS have been great supporters of volleyball in this country and it’s fitting that they are with us as we launch into the inaugural season of the Scape Australian Volleyball Super League,” said Dee.

“Having feature matches available each weekend via SBS On Demand as well as the final on SBS will give the League the kind of exposure it deserves.”

SBS On Demand will live stream at least one match from each round of the regular Super League season, as well as the semi-finals on September 16, before SBS complement the coverage with a television simulcast of the Gold Medal match on September 17.

Following the conclusion of the Australian Volleyball Super League season, SBS On Demand will also provide live and free coverage of the Beach Tour in Torquay from November 19, followed by the Volleyball World Futures finals starting November 25. Both competitions will remain free to view for SBS On Demand viewers, with further rounds in Cobram, Mollymook and Coolangatta scheduled to take place in 2024.
