The Census Explorer is an interactive tool from SBS that lets you go behind the statistics to uncover a rich, visual portrait of who we are, where we live, where we come from, and what languages we speak.
The data that is currently included is a more limited sneak peek of the full Census Explorer to be released 11 July. Return then to find out how your Australia is changing as one of the most multicultural countries in the world.
The data used in this tool was taken from Australia's 2016 Census, which was released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2017.

Key findings from the 2016 Census revealed that:
- Australians are 'losing their religion': one-third of Australians said they don't have a religion - more than two million more than in 2011.
- The "typical" Australian is: Female, 38-years-old, married, born in Australia, of English ancestry, speaks English, lives in a capital city, earns $662 a week and owns two cars
- The Australian population has doubled to an estimated 24.4 million in 50 years, with nearly two million people added since the last census in 2011.
- Australia is becoming more linguistically diverse - the number of Australians speaking only English at home fell from almost 77 per cent to nearly 73 per cent in five years.
- Australia is becoming more religiously diverse - More are turning away from Christianity but there's been a growth in Buddhism, Islam and Sikhism.
