Welcome to the first episode of Corner Chats, bonus episodes of the SBS Football Corner where we speak to Australian football players about their journey to the World Cup. In today's episode we speak to Awer Mabil, who spent the first 10 years of his life in a Kenyan refugee camp before his South Sudanese family relocated to Adelaide in 2006. Twelve years later, Mabil scored a goal against Kuwait in his Socceroos debut. Today, he is competing in his second World Cup, proudly wearing the green-and-gold jersey of the country he now calls home, all while never forgetting his Dinka roots. We sat down with him. This is his story.

Australia is the best country in the world because it's got so many different nationalities in one place. It's a country that has given my family and me everything. I take pride in both my South Sudanese and my Australian background. I have values from both, and I will fight for them equally.
