Defender Miloš Degenek has joined an elite group of players with three FIFA World Cups to their name. Born in the former Yugoslavia during the civil war, his family fled with nothing to rebuild their lives in Australia, the country he chose to represent. In this exclusive interview, Degenek opens up about how his family’s struggles shaped his identity, both on and off the pitch.
We were basically a family doing anything we could to survive. That kind of gave me a little bit of strength and resilience. Maybe without that struggle, I wouldn't have forced myself to be who I am today. I know how hard the struggle is for my parents and how hard it is for me as well.Miloš Degenek
