NY:  40th Anniversary Of John Lennon Death

1980 was a dark year for the world of popular music. On Tuesday the 9th of December, singer John Lennon was shot dead outside his New York apartment by Mark David Chapman, a mentally ill young man.


His death not only deprived the world of a great musical talent, but it also shone a light on the prevalence of guns and violence in American society, giving the rest of the world a chance to air their feelings about it.
All over the world today newspapers and radio and television programs gave special sustained coverage of Lennon’s death.

After his death, the most successful song of his solo career, Imagine, went to number one in the American charts.
