In 2009 Barack Obama was elected as America’s first African-American President. The election of the charismatic Democrat Senator was highly symbolic in a country with a history of slavery and civil rights struggles.


He also had a connection with Australia, having visited here as a boy.
When I returned three years ago as President I had the same feelings that I remembered as a child -- the warmth of the people of Australia, the sense of humour, I learnt to speak a little Strine.

During his presidency, Obama has withdrawn troops from Iraq, introduced public healthcare and acknowledged his support for same-sex marriages.

He also oversaw the assassination of Osama bin Laden.

He was publicly questioned about his religion and country-of-birth, eventually releasing his birth certificate in 2011.

He was re-elected in 2012 to a second term in office.
And those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of the people: 'yes we can'. Thank you. God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America.
