In February 2021, Facebook banned Australians from posting or sharing news content on their site. The move was in response to the Federal Government’s proposed news Media Bargaining Code, which would require technology companies to negotiate with media outlets to carry their news content online.

The ban meant news organisations, like SBS, could not post their content to Facebook and people could not share links to news articles.

The broad ban, also affected non-news sites, including state health departments, charities and the West Australian fire and emergency services page.

The ban was lifted after nine days.

Since then, Facebook shut down its News Tab and affirmed it will not renew deals with individual publishers when they expire.
