The latest book from acclaimed First Nations author Tony Birch is the novel, Women & Children

Author Tony Birch’s latest novel 'Women & Children' is an exploration of family dynamics and domestic violence in working class Melbourne in the 1960s. Told through the eyes of eleven-year-old Joe Cluny, the story is a complex and sensitive picture of a family struggling within a culture of inertia and silence.

Young Joe Cluny is a curious, thoughtful boy living within the happy cocoon of his family - mum Marion, sister Ruby and gentle granddad Charlie.

The protagonist in Tony Birch's latest novel spends his days adventuring and avoiding the watchful eyes of the nuns at his school who have a penchant for using the strap.

Joe's childhood innocence is threatened when his once-spirited Aunty Ooona turns up at their home bruised and bloody, seeking refuge.
The issues in the story do reflect my growing up… living with that terrible secret of knowing that this was happening all around you. Women, of course suffering, but also your friends at school. These were crimes that couldn't be spoken aloud.
Tony Birch
The characters are met with silence as they seek assistance to confront sexist and racist violence. Despite their desperation, they never lose their rebellious spirit. They dance and laugh, and fiercely protect each other.
It reflects my experience of women being a central force in my life, but also being great survivors… I have strong memories of the women in my life being so intimate and happy with each other.
Tony Birch
'Women & Children' is a tender, masterful portrait of a loving Black family that culminates in a cliffhanger ending. Hear the author speaking about the book with host Sarah Malik in this episode of the SBS Book Club.
