The 22-year-old Team Ineos rider told Colombian media his plans for the upcoming season including his decision to pass on Giro with back to back Tour de France wins his number one priority.

Only last month Bernal told Spanish publication AS that he had aspirations of competing in his first Giro d'Italia and that doing the Giro-Tour double would be 'very complicated' but he could do it if the team gave him the go ahead.

Bernal was set to make his debut at the Giro in 2019 leading the Ineos team, but an injury on the eve of the event ruled him out.

He recovered in time for the Tour de Suisse, which he won, before going on to take out the Yellow Jersey, ahead of Ineos teammate Geraint Thomas, at the Tour de France in only his second ever ride in the famous race.

Ineos is also expected to be without Chris Froome for the Giro as he continues his recovery from a severe crash he sustained in June. Fellow Briton Thomas has not yet declared his plans for the upcoming season.

It is believed Bernal will start preparation for his Tour de France title defence on home soil at the Tour Colombia, followed by rides at Paris-Nice, Volta a Catalunya and the Vuelta al Pais Vasco.
