A school in South Australia has embarked on a humble fundraiser to enrol in school girls in two African countries. The school’s effort raised more than 200 times its original goal of $900 after a tweet by Senator Cory Bernardi that condemned the event prompted a flood of support.
The principal of South Australia's Craigburn Primary School said the students organised the Do It In A Dress fundraising drive after learning about girls in Africa who did not have access to education.
Victoria-based charity One Girl was the organisation behind the fundraiser. One Girl’s mission is to offer formal school education to one million girls across Africa. According to the organisations CEO and co-founder Chantelle Baxter, there are many things that will prevent a girl from being enrolled in school. She says millions of girls are prevented from going to school, simply because they were born a girl.
Ms Baxter was a guest on African Hour last year, and with so much interest in what her organisation One Girl does, Martin Kwakwa decided to replay the conversation.
