Europe's central bank has increased interest rates for the first time in 11-years, with the size of the rise unexpected.

The hike is aimed at combating soaring inflation that's reduced people's spending power.

Its benchmark deposit rate has increased by 50 basis points to zero per cent.

The bank's president, Christine Lagarde, says the decision was taken in order to reduce inflation and stabilise prices.
