An epidemiologist says there's a strong case for Australia to build quarantine centres outside the major cities that are modelled on the Howard Springs facility in the Northern Territory.

Professor Michael Toole from the Burnet Institute says with rising case numbers overseas, Australia is likely to need supervised quarantine until 2023.

He says single storey cabins with separate air conditioning systems and outdoor verandas are much safer than the existing quarantine hotels.
