An art workshop in partnership with the Australian Government Department of Social Services, aMBUSH Gallery and SBS has engaged young Australian migrants to help them feel at home here.

A group came together at the Bankstown Arts Centre this week to have a positive discussion around identity and belonging - which was then expressed in the form of street art.
The youth between the ages of 15-24 are from diverse backgrounds including Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Burma, Iran, China, South Korea and Vietnam.

Students learned how to express themselves by creating two panels – one with hand-painted objects of significance from their homeland and the other using words describing their experience of migrating to Australia.

The overwhelming sentiment of the workshop was positive with the five main words chosen by the participants being:
- Optimism
- Lucky
- Peace
- Safe
- Harmony

The project will culminate in a large scale art exhibition in Darling Harbour, Sydney, on Harmony Day 2017.
