Amnesty releases new report into Nauru immigration detention

Human Rights Group Amnesty International has released a report based on interviews with asylum seekers and refugees in Australia's offshore detention camp on the island of Nauru. Over 1,000 adults and children remain on the island behind what Amnesty describes as a fortress of secrecy. The report titled Island of Despair: Australia's processing of refugees on Nauru looks at the lives of people detained under Australia's offshore detention system in the small island nation. It is based on months of research, including interviews with more than 60 people in Nauru and Australia. Senior Director for Research, Anna Neistat, says Amnesty International applied for access to the centre six times over the past two years through official channels, but the organisation's requests were either ignored or rejected.
