Former Prime Minister Paul Keating has slammed the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission ((ACCC)) for allowing the proposed merger between media companies Nine and Fairfax.
The competition watchdog signed off on the merger on Thursday. ((nov 8))
Mr Keating has labelled the $4 billion merger "truly appalling".
He says it'll lessen media diversity and reduce competition in the Australian news market.
ACCC chair Rod Sims admits competition will likely decrease, but not so much it'll irreversibly damage the industry.
The merger comes after media ownership laws were changed in late 2017.
Communications Minister Mitch Fifield said at the time the changes would give media organisations the best chance of survival
