The nation's biggest listed honey company, as well as some major supermarket chains, are facing accusations of selling fake honey to consumers.

Testing at an international lab that specialises in honey fraud detection has found almost half the samples selected from supermarket shelves had been "adulterated" or mixed with other substances.

However, some suppliers have criticised the type of test, saying it wasn't what Australian authorities used.

The joint Fairfax media-A-B-C investigation is expected to spark debate over how honey purity is determined and regulated at both a national and international level.
