Students protesting planned tertiary education changes in next week's Budget have disrupted a speech by Education Minister Simon Birmingham to the National Press Club in Canberra.

Mr Birmingham was talking up the merits of Australian universities when he was joined at the lecturn by demonstrators.

More forty years on, the New South Wales government has apologised to the survivors, emergency workers, and relatives affected by Australia's worst rail disaster.

The Granville train disaster killed eight-three people and injured another 213 in January of 1977.

A commuter train derailed and hit the Bold Street bridge near Granville railway station in Sydney's western suburbs.

The bridge then collapsed onto the train, crushing the third and fourth carriages.

Subsequent investigations discovered ageing infrastructure and a lack of investment in maintainance.

The government pledged to apologise for the way victims were treated and the government's handling of the tragedy.

In delivering the apology in state parliament, New South Wales premier Gladys Berejiklian has acknowledged it's long overdue.
