The coalition win in the New South Wales state election has boosted the confidence of Scott Morrison's federal government.

New South Wales Liberal Premier Gladys Berejiklian's government was returned over the weekend ((mar 23)), winning 47 seats.

Federal Attorney-General Christian Porter says the outcome has reassured the Morrison government it can win the federal poll, expected in May, despite opinion polls pointing towards a Labor victory.

Meanwhile…

Michael Daley will hang onto the New South Wales Labor leadership for at least another six weeks with party executives delaying a spill until after the federal election.

The state Labor leader is facing a leadership challenge after a poor result in Saturday's election with Kogarah M-P Chris Minns touted as the top contender.

A senior party source says head office was delaying the contest until after the federal election - expected in May - to limit any negative impact on the national campaign.
