Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has expressed deep concern over what she's calling the chilling incident in the U-K in which two British citizens are critically ill after being exposed to nerve agent Novichok.

The pair were hospitalised after being found unwell on Saturday in Amesbury, near Salisbury, where former Russian agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were attacked with the same nerve agent in March

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says she's spoken to the British High Commissioner about the incident.

Ms Bishop has pointed the finger at Russia and says this incident along with the attack on the Skripal's adds to the list of reasons it should not be invited back to the G-8.

Meanwhile, Britain's interior minister is expected to chair an emergency meeting of the government's emergency committee as counter terrorism police continue to lead the investigation.
