A man has been arrested after allegedly smashing his car into a North Queensland petrol station and ramming into a police car while three children, aged two, five and 11 were in his vehicle.

Police say the petrol station's doors were destroyed when the accused reversed into them at speed before ramming a police car after 3am Monday on Townsville Road in Ingham.

Police officers had to forcibly remove the man from the vehicle, as he had braced himself inside the car and refused police directions.

All three children were taken to hospital for observation.

A 36-year-old man is due to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on Tuesday, charged with 23 offences including seven counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and two counts of endangering children by exposure.
