United Airlines flight carrying 194 passengers and crew from Los Angeles has landed safely at Sydney Airport after a mayday call caused by low fuel.

A spokesman for the airline says United Flight 839 landed safely "following a mechanical issue", with all passengers disembarking without incident.

In a statement, the NSW Police say a major emergency response was activated at the airport after "a pilot reported a problem".

Some roads were closed as a precaution at around 6.30 am local time, but were reopened minutes later after the plane landed.
