A family is grieving after a three-year-old boy was struck and killed by a ute being driven by his father in the driveway of their Brisbane home on Friday.

It's believed the boy ran behind the ute, which had a box trailer on the back, when he was hit by the vehicle at about 5.20pm on Friday at the Samford Valley home.

The child was trapped under a rear wheel of the vehicle and died at the scene, despite the efforts of police and paramedics.

Senior Sergeant Darren Madgwick said police the incident appeared to be an accident and police weren't treating the death as suspicious.
