A revolutionary therapy that treats aggressive blood cancers has been approved for use in Australia.
The immunotherapy, known as CAR-T, will help children battling leukemia and adults fighting a type of aggressive lymphoma.
The groundbreaking therapy uses a patient's own immune cells to fight cancer in a once-only treatment, unlike chemotherapy and radiotherapy where multiple rounds are usually required.
It has received the green light by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, with Australia following the United States and countries in Europe to approve the therapy.
Until now, patients had been forced to travel overseas if they wished to access the treatment.
The next step is to ensure the therapy is affordable enough for eligible patients.
