An outgoing member of the Huawei- Australia board has defended the company against claims it's a spy for the Chinese government.

Former Victorian premier John Brumby has been on the Huawei Australia  board for eight years, but last week announced that  he'll leave in March.

Criminal charges have been brought against the Chinese company in the United States for bank fraud and stealing trade secrets.

And the Australian  government has banned any Huawei equipment from being used in the new 5-G telephone network.

But, speaking exclusively to S-B-S radio, Mr Brumby says there are misconceptions about Huawei being a security risk.
