Impact of coal closure on household bills

The political fight over electricity prices will be given fresh ammunition by a new report warning the abrupt closure of the giant Hazelwood coal plant is expected to push up yearly electricity bills by an average $78 across Australia over the next two years. It comes as energy ministers meet on Wednesday, and as an unprecedented coalition of business and industry bodies, green groups, unions and charities urge Canberra and the states to fix Australia's faltering energy systems, warning failure will lead to a national crisis.
