It comes after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull stopped short of pulling the trigger on gas export controls, as the nation's energy regulator warns Australia is facing a shortfall in domestic gas supplies for 2018.

The commitment from Santos, Origin Energy and Shell, following a meeting with Mr Turnbull and Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg, means the government won't have to follow through on its threat to restrict exports.

Speaking with the ABC, Mr Joyce says the government still has the capacity to enforce export restrictions if supply demands are not met.
