An Australian aid worker abducted in Afghanistan has been freed.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop confirmed Kerry Jane Wilson, 60, is safe and well.

She was kidnapped at gunpoint in April from her office in the eastern city of Jalalabad.

Ms Bishop said she had been in close contact with Ms Wilson's family during the ordeal and was relieved by the good outcome.

She praised the work of authorities in Afghanistan for helping facilitate the release and the efforts of Australian consular staff.

"To protect those who remain captive or face the risk of kidnapping in Afghanistan and elsewhere, the government will not comment on the circumstances of Kerry Jane's release," Ms Bishop said.

Her family has asked for privacy.
