A man has died in a Sydney house fire after he apparently re-entered the burning building to fight the blaze.

Emergency workers were called to Rodd Point in the inner west just before 2.30am on Tuesday and arrived to fight the house well alight.

A woman and her adult son had escaped the fire but police say it appeared the son had gone back inside to fight the flames and suffered fatal injuries. An investigation is underway.
