A teenage girl's body has been found in a barrel on the back of a ute in Queensland, sparking a massive manhunt.

Queensland Police say that when officers investigating a missing person visited a house in Buccan in Logan on Wednesday afternoon, the owner drove off in the ute.

The vehicle was found a short time later at a caravan park in Stapylton about 20 minutes away.

A search uncovered a dead body that was reportedly found in a barrel and covered by a tarp.

"Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death," a police statement said.

It's understood police know the identity of the victim, and that she was not from the area where Wednesday's drama played out.

A police social media post about a 16-year-old girl missing from north of Brisbane was recently removed.
