A male detainee at Sydney's Villawood Immigration Detention Centre has been rushed to hospital after a medical episode, sources say.

It's believed the detainee may not have survived but this is still to be confirmed through official channels.

A source told AAP a man was taken from the detention centre to a nearby hospital after suffering suspected cardiac arrest on Tuesday.

A video, believed to have been shot inside the western Sydney detention centre and seen by AAP, shows paramedics working on a person on the ground in a large yard.

It shows detainees gathering around buildings matching known images of the detention centre as a stretcher is prepared to transport the man.

Messages from a person close to a detainee, also seen by AAP, claim a 30-year-old man collapsed suddenly on Tuesday afternoon and died.

The Department of Home Affairs has been contacted for comment.
