The Federal Government has confirmed claims that Medicare card numbers can be purchased online and says the matter has been referred to the Australian Federal Police.
An investigation by The Guardian newspaper has revealed a so-called "darknet" trader is selling Medicare card details for less than $30 online.
The paper claims one of its journalists bought his own Medicare card details from the dark web.
Labor frontbencher Brendan O'Connor has told Sky News there must be government accountability.
