Melbourne factory goes up in flames

A factory fire in Melbourne's west is spewing smoke over surrounding suburbs as firefighters struggle to control the blaze.

A factory in Melbourne's west has gone up in flames, with a series of explosions hampering firefighting efforts.

The blaze began at the 100m by 200m Tottenham building around 5am on Thursday, with 20 trucks and 80 firefighters at the scene, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said.

A spokesman added there had been a series of minor explosions inside the factory and the owner was on the way the scene.

Residents within a 2km radius of the Somerville Rd blaze are urged to stay inside, shut their windows and turn off air-conditioners to avoid the smoke.

The fire is understood to be at the former site of Highland Pallets, which is no longer based at the factory.
