It's not known whether ASIO complied with a 2013 request from the Immigration Department to delay security checks so asylum seekers would miss a protection deadline.

According to cabinet documents obtained by the ABC, then-immigration minister Scott Morrison agreed with the move as a means to delay permanent protection visas being handed out.

"As minister for Immigration and Border Protection, it was my policy and practice to put Australia's national security interests first," Mr Morrison said in a statement on Tuesday.
