Morrison dismisses suggestions to reduce the nation's migration intake

Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison has dismissed suggestions to reduce the nation's migration intake.

It comes after former prime minister Tony Abbott called for a cut in numbers, saying infrastructure and housing stocks can't keep up with current immigration rates.

Mr Morrison - who was immigration minister under Mr Abbott - says the permanent migration level has remained steady since 2011.

He says cutting levels would cost the economy billions and reduce the number of skilled migrants
