Labor's leader Anthony Albanese has backed his colleague Kristina Keneally after criticism of her Home Affairs portfolio appointment.

Liberal MP and Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has attacked the choice because she has previously said she disliked turning back boats.

Ms Keneally has clarified she does support offshore processing but is against the practice being an indefinite detention period for refugees.

Mr Albanese has told ABC TV, Labor will hold the government to account because the treatment of new arrivals needs to be improved.
