Morrison unveils anti-corruption watchdog and new laws to combat religious discrimination

The federal government has announced the creation of a Commonwealth Integrity Commission. The body will have two divisions, focusing on law enforcement agencies and the public sector.

The federal government has announced the creation of a Commonwealth Integrity Commission.

The body will have two divisions, focusing on law enforcement agencies and the public sector

The commission can investigate issues but can't hold public hearings.

But Opposition leader Bill Shorten says the idea is woefully inadequate.

Religious discrimination will soon be unlawful in Australia under new laws announced by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, as the government unveiled its long-awaited response to the Ruddock review.

The government will draft a new Religious Discrimination Act, making ‘religious beliefs’ a protected characteristic and extending similar protections to those that apply to race, age, gender, sexuality and disability.
