The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation director general Duncan Lewis warned yesterday during an appearance before a Senate estimates committee that countries were trying to access classified information about Australia's alliances, as well as its military, economic and energy systems.

Lewis said also that espionage, interference, sabotage and malicious insider activities can inflict catastrophic harm on our country's interests.

Lewis noted the "grim reality" there are more foreign intelligence officers now than during the cold war.
