A mother-of-two has been identified as the victim of the mid-air explosion of an engine on a plane in the US.

The Southwest Airlines flight from New York to Dallas, with 149 people on board, was forced to make an emergency landing in Philadelphia after an engine exploded and smashed a window.

One person died and seven others were critically injured.

Philadephia Department Commissioner Adam Thiel (Teal) says authorities are working to determine the cause of the failure.
