A post-mortem examination will be conducted today [[Wed 19/6]] on the body of a newborn baby found yesterday [[Tues 18/6]] abandoned in the backyard of a home at Newcastle in New South Wales.

New South Wales emergency services were called to an address on Church Street in the beachside suburb of Stockton just after 7-a-m on Tuesday following the discovery.

Police say the autopsy will aim to determine the age, sex and cause of death.

It's unclear how or when the baby got there, or who the parents are.

Detective Superintendent Brett Greentree described the situation as "heartbreaking".

He says police hold serious concerns for the mother, whom it's believed gave birth "very recently" and may need medical assistance.
