Same-sex couples to head to wedding registries as new laws enacted

Same-sex couples can begin filing their intentions to marry on Saturday, with the first weddings to take place on January 9.

Same-sex couples will head to wedding registries or their computers on Saturday to submit their intentions to marry, after newly-passed laws were enacted overnight.

Governor-General Peter Cosgrove gave the laws royal assent on Friday morning, a day after they cleared parliament following a marathon debate.
