The Israeli military confirmed late Sunday night that one officer was killed and another was moderately wounded during an operation in the southern Gaza Strip.

"During IDF special forces’ operational activity in Gaza, an exchange of fire broke out, during which an IDF officer was killed and an additional IDF officer was moderately injured," the IDF Spokesperson's Unit said in a statement. The military added the officer was a lieutenant colonel.

At least seven Palestinians were said killed in the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday after heavy fire was exchanged along the Israel-Gaza border, according to Palestinian sources, including a commander in Hamas' military wing. Hamas claimed that four of the casualties were part of its organization.
