Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is promising that, if he's elected as Prime Minister, his government will spend two percent of Australia's Gross Domestic Product per year on defence.
In the last full financial year the Labor party was in government, defence spending dropped to 1.6 percent of Gross Domestic Product- the lowest such level since World War Two.
Speaking to the Lowy Institute in Sydney about defence and foreign policy, Mr Shorten says Australia must be proactive when dealing with ongoing change in both the United States and China.Mr Shorten also says Labor will boost foreign aid if elected, and also encourage private firms to invest infrastructure project to boost development
