Sri Lankan man who threatened to blow up a plane from Melbourne has been jailed for 12 years.

Manodh Marks forced Malaysia Airlines flight MH128 to Kuala Lumpur to turn back shortly after take-off, when he falsely claimed he had a bomb.

The court heard the 26-year-old was in a psychotic state after using the drug ice, when he pretended a speaker and charger were a bomb.

Marks must serve a non-parole period of nine years before he's deported.
