New drivers will have to get more supervised practice, including at least 15 hours at night, under a Tasmanian licensing overhaul.

The tougher graduated licensing system will be introduced at the end of next year and will include 30 hours of logged driving in the first stage of a learners permit on top of the already-compulsory 50 hours required in the second stage.

Those on an L2 permit will have to clock 15 hours of night driving in those 50 hours and once a new driver aged under 25 has their license, they will be temporarily restricted to just one passenger aged between 16 and 21.

All learner and probationary drivers will face a total mobile phone ban, including hands free devices.
